Formed in 1970 Chicago by Maurice White, growing out of a band previously known as The Salty Peppers, the group featured an ever-changing lineup of at least 8 band members at a time. The name was chosen as White’s starsign, Sagittarius, according to classical triplicities, has a main elemental quality of Fire and seasonal qualities of Earth and Air, leading to the band’s name of Earth, Wind and Fire.
Described by Rolling Stone magazine as "innovative, precise yet sensual, calculated yet galvanizing,” Earth, Wind and Fire have sold over 100 million records, making them one of the most successful bands of all time. They have received 20 Grammy Award nominations, winning 6 as a group and 2 won by the individual group members Maurice White and Phillip Bailey. Five of the group’s members have been inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, whilst the group as a whole have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and have a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
